About Me

Hi! I'm William. I'm from the East Coast of Australia. I work full-time as a real estate agent in Japan, and I teach/translate Japanese freelance on my days off.

I’ve been studying Japanese for over 10 years, and I still remember exactly what it felt like to start from zero. Exciting for a few weeks, then mostly frustrating as the reality of how hard Japanese is as a language set in.

Learning a new language is never easy, but I truly believe that anyone can learn to speak Japanese if they stick with it. My approach is a little old-school: I love working with textbooks, jotting things down with pen and paper, and taking the time to truly understand the structure and flow of the language. If you’re someone who appreciates a thoughtful, step-by-step learning process, I think we’ll get along great.

I'm a realist and I'm very upfront about it. I'm not going to make you fluent in 2 years. Taking my lessons won't allow you to pass the JLPT N1 after just 6 months. But it will help you to study in a very structured, sensible way that will guarantee you make progress.

I want people to genuinely enjoy the process of learning Japanese — not just as a means to an end, but as a way to lead a richer, more fulfilling life. Language opens doors to new ways of thinking, new relationships, and new perspectives. My hope is that my students feel a sense of curiosity and wonder as they explore Japanese, rather than feeling overwhelmed or intimidated by it. Japanese can seem complex at first, but with the right approach, it becomes something deeply rewarding — even fun. I'm here to help you see the beauty in the challenge and to support you every step of the way.
